I am sure this has happened to a few of us. When we are given a topic to research or worst told to find our own topic to do an essay on. The hardest part I have found is that I never know where to start. What’s something interesting I should write about? And once I found the topic will others find it interesting? These are question that always have me double guessing myself. But after reading this article, I have found a lot of useful tips that can make my score of a B into an A.
This article teaches about “How to turn a boring topic into a brilliant one”. For example taking the concept of a coffee mug and brainstorming. This brainstorming process should start with noting down the basic like What, Where, When and How. Once these questions have been noted, do a simple Google search on the topic and the number of results you will have will astound you. Also do a Yahoo Answer search which will give a lot more information too.
This will give you information on what people think about that topic rather than you having to rack your brain figuring out how you feel start with how other feel about it and see where you agree or disagree with the topic. I know the example of coffee is very broad but if you were to switch it around to more pressing issues imagine the results will get. Another great place to find information is on social media this is where you will find direct information and case studies that can be incorporated into your work.
But if you are having problems brainstorming here are some great tips on brainstorming. Good things to remember is when brainstorming there is no right or wrong answer the more ambiguous the better because that will open so many other channels for you. This semester of my Business Studies we had to run a Google Ad Words campaign for a real life business. My chosen business was NCI– a sign installation company based in West Auckland.
This blog is a reflection on how I felt the campaigns went and how I felt about the experience.
It has been a learning experience from the beginning because I had never heard of Google Adwords and how it worked. After been given a very intense and information filled lecture, I was left more lost than ever. This has all been a self-taught experience that I wish I was given more information on to have done my project better.
Most of what I knew about Google AdWords was received from friends, lecturers and online. Upon the 14 days of running the campaign, the first week was spent learning how to bid on words, what words to use and how much to spend on them. The most difficult part of running campaign and being a beginner is understand how the bids work. I thought once bids were set as automatic is will apply for words over my set bid but that was the mistake that cost me a whole week of clicks. This is a mistake I will never repeat again and I advise all gain as much information of it before you start running a campaign.
Apart from the negatives I can see how this tool can be very beneficial to businesses. Found here are some advantages of Google Adwords. Once I had gotten used to using AdWords, I believe my partner and I become quite good at it. We know exactly what words to use which ones to pause and how to use our budget. Facebook has just rolled out a new feature that adds yet another dimension to marketing. This feature is only available to a small group such as CNN, Mashable and Bleacher Report. I always wondered when this day would come, when Facebook would inevitably lose its appeal. It has already started with the teens. I recently read a blog by 13 year olds perceptive. I’m 13 and None of My Friends Use Facebook.
It states the reason for this can be due to the fact that there are so many social media platform to choose from. Such as Instagram, SnapChat and Vine (which I am unclear of) – this could be due to the fact I am not a teen. A study done by Pew Research Centre found that 77% of online users (ages 12-17) use Facebook. The reason behind this being that more and more adults are joining and is now no longer seen as “cool” by the younger generation. For someone whose from the ‘funky’ older generation, it’s a bit of a stab too that heart to been seen as making something uncool!
On the contrary found here, Creator of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg believes this to be untrue and argues that close to 100% of all teens use the service.
Most teens did not have Facebook when the commodity of it was so high because of its age restrictions. Now when teens are of age to sign up, new competitions have emerged. It also suggests that this can be due to online bullying and unnecessary marketing ploys generated from interest based “likes”.

Social media such as Instagram and Twitter avoids such push marketing. The blogger comes to the realisation that “Facebook has been trying too hard. Teens hate it when people try too hard” which in my opinion is not true. As teens tend to go with the “herd” and want to be accepted.
Therefore I believe the drop is due to the increase of different platforms and complicated new designs. Personally I am glad to hear such news because now when I go on Facebook I will not have to witness improper use of the site.
I understand hashtags (#) have been a common use of reference for social media platforms but I have finally clicked on to what it is all about. Thanks to the help of a fellow student in my Digital Marketing class who posted an interesting article of our Google+ community.

I now understand that hashtags are used as search tools for businesses and users who wish to promote their page or company.
It was interesting to discover that hashtags can be used in many useful ways. Such as expanding your social media presence, branding and from a business’s prospective, promoting specials & events. The article Build your brand with hashtags further expands on these examples.

I have recently started working on marketing campaign for a small West Auckland business and once the company page is online I intend to use the power of #’s. I believe hashtags can be a very beneficial tool for businesses to use.
